Food Fence - Field Fence delivers a cost effective open strategy based on the observation of current conditions and the evolution of the Red Hook Food Vendors Market. A project capable of reshaping progressively over time to address the growing and constantly changing needs of the vendors and the vicinity, reinforcing the economic and cultural impact of the market and the value of the park as the heart of the neighborhood.
By redefining present elements and situations, the project rethinks the existing fences as flexible links more than as barriers, as expandable frames. Following the original layout of the park, a series of concentric rings from the street up towards the soccer field, house the different activities and uses. The outer ring, a New York City Park’s typical fence, becomes the Food Fence. Opened in rhythmic lengths it becomes the support for customizable additions and permeable elements that promote the interaction between the prepping/vending areas and the seating/eating areas. The second ring, the chain link Field Fence, enclosing another of the park activities, is altered to take on a larger scale while housing uses for both sides of it. This fence re-draws the elliptical promenade and the parks topography up on the air, embracing new uses and sustainable features. Additionally a multipurpose building housing back up services for the park is located along side a re-activated Halleck Street, opposite to the border where the market is proposed.
Through the design of these customizable and portable elements the market’s expressive nature is recaptured while complying with health restrictions. And by addressing variable temporal settings we minimize its impact on the existing landscape, achieving further adaptability.
